Rapid growth in demand for transportation on South American routes and a severe shortage of some liner companies (especially for 40-foot containers) resulted in the supply of space on the routes outstripping demand, and market freight rates continued to rise sharply.
The index for the eastern South American route was 1,320.7 points, up 15.2% from the previous period, while the index for the western South American route was 1,603.2 points, up 35.9% from the previous period. South American routes will have a hard time finding cabins until November or even the end of October and freight rates will continue to rise.
